Teaching Philosophy

I am approaching the end of my M.Ed-Literacy Specialist program. The courses I have taken at UMW have not only provided me with great opportunities for collaboration with other educators, but have also caused my teaching philosophy to evolve greatly. I realize more and more each day just how big of a role literacy plays in all that I do as an educator. I believe literacy can and should be embedded in all we do as educators, from math to social studies to P.E. class. I believe in a hands-on approach to teaching. Students should be asked to take an active part in their learning. I also believe that students should have a voice in the classroom and should be collaborating with each other and with their teachers. I have learned so much from my kindergarten students over the years!

I knew that my teaching philosophy would no doubt continue to evolve and change as I moved through the INDT course. I also knew that technology was motivating for students, but was amazed at the sheer volume of resources that are out there for educators and students! The INDT course added yet another layer to my literacy-embedded teaching philosophy. I learned so many great ways to incorporate literacy through technology during this semester.
