Critical Evaluation Survey

The Critical Evaluation Survey for the Elementary School Level created by Kathy Schrock:

I would use the Critical Evaluation Survey with my kindergarten students in a whole group setting on the SMART Board. We would go through the survey together as we looked at several websites discussing the contributions of the famous Americans we are required to cover in kindergarten, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. In order to be sure that I do not overwhelm or confuse my students, I would most likely use bits and pieces of the Kathy Schrock survey, such as locating the author of the website and the date the page was made, as well as evaluating the pictures/photographs shown. We would also discuss if they noticed anything on the web site that they knew to be wrong about the Americans we studied. It is important for students, even as young as kindergarten, to understand that not everything found on the Internet is true. There will be many web sites out there that discuss Dr. King and Presidents Washington and Lincoln, but some of these may be opinion pieces and not factual information about their lives and contributions and it is important that students learn to distinguish between the two when conducting research.
